The Hague NL: Every Week is Eurobike to Work Week

Eurochildren are taught to look six ways before crossing the street – two ways for trains, two ways for cars, and finally, just when they think they are in the clear – for bicycles.

Biking to work is tradition in the low countries (and also formerly in China.)

The bike rack is not an afterthought, like at US shopping malls.

Here is a bike-car collision aftermath right outside the hotel. Tan trenchcoat 55+ velobusinessman hit by little French car – there was a thud, trenchcoat went down, he was clearly shaken, but they talked and the trenchcoat rode off (although the doorman is obviously calling the hotel’s attorneys.)

Yet, no one wears a bicycle helmet (about 50% on motorcycles.)

For many, the bike is the family car.

The bikes are stately, like the Dutch.

They ringring you if you step into their lane.

One consequence of this flat-landed orderly society riding bikes and public transportation is that there is noticeably less auto traffic – leaving more room for those people with little “D”s on their license plates.
