It's OK to Laugh

Modern “art” sometimes is political.

Sometimes, it’s a bit silly.

In the US, we have the SF MOMA and the Mothership NY MOMA – both of which are free for children under 16.

Free is good, because even though some modern art looks like “art” it does not necessarily excite today’s youth. But at least this teenager knows who Picasso is.

And Vincent van Gogh.

And Jackson Pollock.

Sometimes the modern art is more ambitious than inspiring.

Or less ambitious – like this trapezoid of “string and metal fasteners.”

Or this cube of hay (yes the Japanese tourists were reprimanded in English for touching the art.)

Or pretentious, like “The Middle of the World” which looks to us like broken window shades.

Or NY MOMA’s crowning achievement – The Stick (”oil on canvas.”)

We were somewhat surprised in our visit to NY MOMA today that European visitors out numbered Americans by at least 5-to-1. But that’s ok, because American tourists who are not art-loving youths like those pictured here would probably criticize the “art” and ruin it for the rest of us.
