Missoula MT: The Rolling Stones 10/4/2006 At Grizzly Stadium in Missoula MT: Sentinel
In honor of the Exile on Main Street re-release, we reprise our review of The Rolling Stones’ one-and-only Montana show:
Beautiful 65 degree night in Missoula. Thousands walking over the footbridge in moderately peaceful Montana style considering the circumstance. Mt. Sentinel had groups all over lined up in little sets watching from afar. Stadium has only about 25 rows so it was a packed little bowl and the floor was full. Generally older crowd than you might otherwise see at a Stones show, but it was a school night. Seat neighbors mostly U. Montana employees including a “very friendly” 56 year old woman and her husband. Mick skips one beat when he makes eye contact with a patron in Row 11.
Jumpin Jack Flash -- Mick is prancing and bowing like an english knight, lithe and skinny like a dance instructor. In some of his costumes his belly shows and no doubt it is nicer than Brittney Spears’. Keith’s animatronics team must have been prepared for cold weather because his costume changes were from one trenchcoat to another.
Only Rock & Roll -- Mick does a hello to Great Falls and Spo Kane.
Oh No Not You Again -- Mick says how beautiful it is and that he has never been to Montana before. Then “I went out today and shot and Elk. But I put it back.” I think this is a fishing joke.
Let’s Spend the Night Together -- Mick does not have to ask.
Streets of Love (Mick falsetto)
All Down the Line -- Hard to say if this could ever be topped (say on 10/31/09 in the future?)
Midnight Rambler -- Keith’s handlers pick him off the floor and re-arrange him facing our side of the stage.
Tumbling Dice (Crowd on “You’ve Got to Love Me”)
Band Introductions -- Charlie Watts has retained his normal guy look
You Get the Silver (Keith) Keith also acknowledges that he’s never been to Montana before “And I’ve been around.”
Little T&A (”She’s My Little Rock & Roll”) (Keith)
Miss You -- “People think I’m crazy...”
Rough Justice -- They may have forgotten that music doesnt change the world anymore.
Get Off of My Cloud -- Crowd weak on the “Hey” “Hey” “You” “You” echoes, probably they have too much chew in.
Honky Tonk Woman -- This was probably being reverberated from porch to porch all the way to the Bitterroots.
Sympathy for the Devil -- Mick is the world’s rock star.
Start Me Up -- What is this a commercial for again?
Brown Sugar (Crowd on “Ya Ya Ya Whoo’s”)
E:
You Can’t Always Get What You Want -- from now own I am pronouncing “Can’t” like Mick
I Can’t Get No Satisfaction - I have worn a brand new white shirt just for the occasion.
