Denver CO: The String Cheese Incident 7/23/10 at Red Rocks Amphitheater

The Colorado native bluegrass-hippie sextet The String Cheese Incident had their first show last night at Red Rocks Amphitheater after a hiatus. This was SCI’s first show at their home court of Red Rocks in three years. Show was a sell-out at 9000, including green-hairs and indian chiefs.

Here is the Cheese team in action. They are talented, but more muddled than the Phish. Their songs and segues are cute but not as deep and moving as the Phish. The sound was light, not as full as the Phish. But the show was good in its own way, with lots of color and mandolinny stuff. Here is the 7/23/10 setlist. The only song I knew the title of was Joe Walsh’s Rocky Mountain Way -- think it’s safe to say it was a fan favorite.

Hats and feathers are acceptable accessories if your hair is not already knotted with dirt and dung.

Here is one of the cheesegirls doing the trademark String Cheese Incident hula hooping -- just like the Grateful Dead heads did their trademark sleeping in ditches and the Phish phans do their trademark rule-flouting (phlouting?) Note the furry gaiters -- seen on many of the cheesegirls -- not certain what the green sharpie-oval on her thigh represents (hula hooping?) These cheesegirls also sport stuffed-animal purses and backpacks -- like cute smuggler gear.

Here is noted hippie-artist Keith Scramble Campbell doing his art at the show. The museum at the top of Red Rocks has a large display of his work along with fantastic live band photos going back over 50 years (Red Rocks was a Roosevelt Work Project in the 1930’s. Where is BHO when the Gorge needs permanent plumbing!)

So, the Cheese are gouda, but not as solid as the Phish.
